Salmon Fishing Techniques
Our father-and-son captain team brings years of local knowledge to help you master the water. We focus on trolling to target salmon, ensuring you're comfortable and confident from start to finish. Our mission is to share the thrill of Pacific Northwest salmon fishing in a fun, safe environment.
Trolling
When salmon are more spread out, we use trolling to cover larger areas of water efficiently. This method is especially effective for coho salmon in the fall. By pulling lures or bait at varying depths, we can target salmon actively feeding in different parts of the water column.
Salmon Species in Seattle
Our local waters in the Seattle area and Puget Sound offer world-class opportunities to catch multiple salmon species throughout the season. At Ruby D Charters, we focus primarily on three:
-
King Salmon, also known as Chinook, are the largest and most powerful salmon in Puget Sound, offering a thrilling challenge for anglers. The State sets season, it is likely to open mid July, we will find out from Fish and Wildlife in mid-April. Some local anglers pursue winter Kings, known as Blackmouth. Prized for their firm, rich meat, and powerful runs, Kings are a true trophy catch. Blackmouth opens April 2nd four days per week, Wednesday to Saturday.
-
Silver Salmon, or Coho, provide fast-paced fishing action and are known for their aggressive strikes and surface-oriented feeding habits, often biting at the top 50 feet of water. Coho start appearing in early summer, but the peak season runs from late August through November when larger fish move in. They are acrobatic fighters, often leaping from the water, making them one of the most exciting salmon to catch. Their mild, flavorful meat is also a favorite among seafood lovers.
-
Pink Salmon, or Humpies, are abundant and fun to catch, making them an excellent choice for anyone including families and beginners. Their peak season occurs in odd-numbered years, typically in late summer, when they arrive in huge numbers, creating non-stop action on the water. While smaller than King or Silver Salmon, Pinks provide fast and exciting fishing, often resulting in quick limits. Their high-energy fights make them a favorite for younger fishing enthusiasts. When the schools are thick, the bite is constant, turning a day on the water into an adventure you’ll never forget.
